What are kitchen zones?
Updated: Oct 10
A Zoned Kitchen organizes the room around specific activities instead of simply arranging cabinets and appliances. This makes cooking, cleaning, and entertaining feel more natural and efficient.
Food Storage Zone
Purpose: Getting food in and out of the kitchen easily.
Include:
*Refrigerator
*Pantry or tall storage cabinet
*Food-storage drawers
*Pull-out pantry
Tip: Keep frequently used foods close to the refrigerator and primary prep area.

Prep Zone
Purpose: Washing, chopping, mixing, and preparing ingredients.
Include:
*Generous Countertop space
*Sink nearby
*Cutting Boards
*Knives and utensils
*Mixing Bowls
Tip: A compost/base waste basket bin near the prep area can make clean up easier.

Cooking Zone
Purpose: Everything needed to cook the meal
Include:
*Cooktop or range
*Oven
*Pots and Pans
*Cooking Utensils
*Spices and oils
*Landing area
Tip: Keep Frequently used cookware and utensils within one or two steps of the cooking surface.

Beverage Zone
Purpose: Create drinks without interfering with meal preparation.
Include:
*Coffee maker
*Espresso machine
*kettle
*Cups and mugs
*Coffee/tea storage
*Beverage refrigerator if desired
Tip: A beverage station can be especially useful in a kitchen where several people use the space simultaneously.

Serving & Dining Zone
Purpose: Move food from the kitchen to the table or island.
Consider:
*Dish and glassware storage
*Serving Platters
*Flatware
*Open Shelving
*Island seating
Positioning these items near the dining area can reduce unnecessary traffic through the cooking zone.

Baking Zone
If baking is a regular activity, create a dedicated area with:
*Mixing Bowls
*Measuring Tools
*Baking Sheets
*Flour and Sugar Storage
*Stand Mixer
*Convenient countertop space
